TV card in actionSimon Wilson tells us: "The first public release of PCITV is finally available!" The project, which brings budget PCI TV viewing to the Iyonix, means that RISC OS now has access to those cheap TV tuner cards that PC land has enjoyed for some time.

From the website: "PCITV is a driver and TV viewing application for RISC OS, bringing television and frame capture to the desktop for under 30 pounds, the cost of the card. The driver is free and protected by the GPL, meaning that the source is also available. I hope this will encourage others to create drivers for other PCI cards."

Our prolific news monkey Jake Monkeyson adds:
PCITV is able to show TV pictures at full frame rate by communicating with the graphics card directly, meaning the computer's processor is free to do it's own thing, and there are no problems with multitasking. The software was inspired by the Linux bttv drivers. Simon has more work in the pipeline, but PCITV is perfectly usable in its current state.

Of course, you don't just have to use the card to stare at the goggle box. The Pinnacle PCTV Rave, which costs less than ?30, comes with composite and S-video inputs, so you can plug in your camcorder or video player. The Iyonix can be turned into a game station by plugging in a console, or you could become the next Nick Park and create your own Wallace and Gromit style animation.

Thirty quid for a TV on your Iyonix? Bargain, I say. I guess you'll be needing that download link right away then.

I use this to play my GameCube, and it works well! The picture isn't as sharp as it could be, as I'm using the composite input. The TV card can input S-video, which provides a better image, but the European GameCube doesn't output it. :|
